download Skype mobile on Verizon phones free

As promised at the Mobile World Congress in January, Skype mobile is now available on the select Verizon Wireless smartphones with a data plan. The software is a free download from Verizon’s site and allows you to talk and IM on your phone while in the US and abroad. Verizon pitched Skype mobile as an “imaginary bridge between you and your loved ones abroad,” putting emphasis on international calling.

True to its network openness mantra, Verizon didn’t block other advanced features, like free Skype-to-Skype calls and Skype’s low rates to international cellphone and landline numbers. Of course, in order to place outbound VoIP calls, you’ll need to purchase Skype credits for your account. Here’s how Verizon described the software:

With Skype mobile, you’ll be able to make and receive unlimited Skype-to-Skype calls or instant messages to anyone on Skype around the world. And, even international Skype-to-Skype calls are unlimited.

While affordable Skype VoIP calls to international cell phones don’t count against the minutes included with your plan, domestic calls to US landline and cellphone numbers placed from Skype mobile will be charged, Verizon said, against your Verizon plan minutes. Duh!

Initially, Skype mobile is available on Verizon’s most popular smartphones sold with data plans, including the BlackBerry Storm 9530, Storm2 9550, Curve 8330, Curve 8530, 8830 World Edition, and Tour 9630, in addition to the Motorola Droid and Devour and HTC’s Eris.
